…to lead with compassion, elevate every voice, and build a stronger, more resilient community — together.
Resilient communities were never more important. With the attacks on families committed at the federal level, we not only have to address the specific needs and issues that Longmont faces, but we must also protect our residents, so that they feel safe.
In my first campaign for Longmont’s Ward 3, I pledged to advocate for solutions that positively impact our quality of life. And my experience as an educator embodied an urgency for what’s at stake — our children.
As a 30-year public employee, and a St Vrain Valley educator for 21 years, I brought working class representation to city council, ensuring that families and our most vulnerable residents would have a voice. I know how to build coalitions that proactively strengthen communities and provide support for those who need it.
Passion, Pragmatism, & Experience. This is the engine that fuels my ability to effectively address the serious issues of our community, whether it is housing affordability, our schools, the health and safety of our community, or sustainable energy — all of it — dramatically impacts our overall livelihood and well-being.
HERE ARE MORE OF MY ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
Serving on Longmont City Council since 2019, I worked with city staff to embed equity and inclusivity in all aspects of our operations.
QUALITY OF LIFE: I have served on the Boulder County Consortium of Cities steering committee for enacting HB19-1210 Establishing Local Minimum Wage Laws as a means of addressing the gap between wages and cost of living.
HOUSING: We restructured and assumed leadership of the Longmont Housing Authority. I felt strongly that this was a necessity in order to build sustainability for some of our most economically vulnerable members of our community. In 2023, we broke ground on the Zinnia Project, a trauma informed designed facility that provides 55 Permanent Supportive Housing units.
I have championed building for-sale attainable (missing middle-tier) housing through the creation of an attaining housing fund, so that working class people can purchase homes within their price range. Moving forward with strategic and necessary policy changes that included:
- Higher-density, affordable housing approvals streamline development and attract workforce
- In early 2025, updated building codes to allow higher-density developments – supporting narrower streets, alleys, and electric-only developments—to encourage more housing and associated commercial growth
- Directing staff to enhance affordable housing incentives, including zoning variances, greater height/density allowances, fast-tracking approvals, and reduced buffer/parking requirements to streamline development.
Actions such as these paved the way for projects like True North development that will consist of 185 housing units—a mix of townhomes and single-family homes priced for households earning up to 120% of Area Median Income (AMI).
MENTAL HEALTH: I understand that many 911 calls are related to mental illness and addiction concerns. As a council member I have lobbied at the state and national level for funding to expand local resources to ensure first responders are trained and mental health professionals are assisting with these calls for help. I currently sit on the CORE/LEAD Team Steering Committee working on strengthening and expanding our mental health and rehabilitation services which include crisis outreach and response, and assisted diversion. Through my work on this committee and collaboration with the school district we will be bringing in the SCORE Team in area schools, which will offer support for students and families in crisis.
I have fought for and have been successful in securing approximately $520,000 (20% of human services fund) of much needed ongoing funding for nonprofits supporting mental health and well-being. During my term, I supported allocation of $300,000 of one-time Marijuana Tax for addiction and mental health services.
ENVIRONMENT: I sit on the Resource Conservation Advisory Board where were are exploring options for a regional composting facility. I have built coalitions with neighboring municipalities to help us attain our zero-waste goal. Air quality continues to be a concern, I plan to continue to work with city staff to ensure that air and water quality monitoring continues, as well as holding gas and oil accountable for properly capping wells. I brought forward the measure to fund Open Space in perpetuity, ensuring our Open Space program is preserved for generations to come.
TRANSPORTATION: I’m an avid supporter of Vision Zero as a means of rethinking traffic issues that puts pedestrian and cyclist safety at the core of roadway design to ensure safe mobility for all.
SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE: In addition to focusing on strengthening core services and physical infrastructure, we must not forget our library, museum, parks and recreation facilities and programs. These public spaces serve the community as great equalizers for all of Longmont. I currently serve on the Youth Council, Library Advisory Board, and Museum Advisory Board. Through my involvement on these boards, I have connected with community on the essential services these departments provide for everyone.
ECONOMIC VITALITY: I commit to continue to collaborate with staff and economic groups, such as the Latino Chamber and the Chamber of Commerce to ensure our local business can thrive and overcome the hardships of inflation and ever-growing economic uncertainty.
I’m Susie Hidalgo-Fahring, and I’m running for mayor because Longmont deserves a mayor who listens, leads with compassion, and puts people first. As a longtime educator, community advocate, and current City Council member, I know that real progress happens when we work together. From affordable housing to environmental stewardship to supporting local businesses, I’m committed to solutions that reflect our shared values and diverse voices. Let’s move Longmont forward — together.
